Canyon Doors is a great park and play spot located on the Middle Gauley. The main feature comes in at lower flows, between 800-1200. However there are other spots that come in at different flows but the river right wave/hole is the best.

When we got word that the Middle Gauley was at 1000 CFS we piled into the cars with kayaks and began the trek out to the Gauley. Canyon Doors is truly a beautiful place. Even if it didn’t have a fun surf wave it would still be a great place to go and relax on hot days. Huge cliff walls line the right bank while the left has big flat rocks with a great view of the feature.

No one threw any mcnastys or phonix monkeys or things of that sort, it was just group of kayakers and rafters hanging out on the rocks and having fun. Sean stole the show, a relative newbie to kayaking threw down in the hard boat. He linked consistent spins and start to drop little blunts and backstabs. It’s refreshing seeing someone new to the sport learn quickly and be so enthusiastic about it. Shanon caught a some good rides while Jay and I work on refining our basics. The rafters took turns on river boards and swimming the rapids.  As much as we all love surfing huge bouncy waves or running the steep hairy creeks, this is what keeps me coming back to West Virginia.
