One thing about these surf events is that you never know who is going to show up in this case we had many. Bryon Dorr of Exploring Elements, who is coming off of a wrist injury he got in Colorado, came out to show his support with fellow overlander, David Priddis. He did not get a chance to surf, but took a stab at longboarding in the parking lot as many of the kids that showed up did. Greg Babikoff of B & B Boatz brought one of his hand crafted cats. Even my wife’s mother showed up on her Harley with her man John for the barbecue. Willie Illingworth made an appearance with Jen Peterson and half of Team Bensch, Kyrsten Everson came out as well. Local Fluid rep Luke Spencer brought his board and caught a few waves with our son Jeffery in his Valley Rush 2. Several kids took turns in the parking lot with all the longboards that made it out. David Priddis, who we met in Santa Cruz in March was just coming off the first part of his adventure in Alaska. He has been in the Portland area for the last several weeks.
Willie Illingworth took the top prize for the biggest air and Seth Nunley came away with best trick on his longboard getting some pretty serious air. David Priddis got the longest ride and Greg Babikoff showed us what a cat boat can really do in the surf. The cat boats that Greg builds are very light. In fact one person can move this around pretty easy. The tubes are custom made from Jack’s Plastic and Greg hand welds the frames himself. If you are in the market for a great one person cat boat that can run just about anything, look no further.
This was the first of two Hometown Throwdowns at the beach. Join us next month on August 12th at Pacific City in preparation for the Pacific City Surf Off in late September then the Hobuck Hoedown at Neah Bay in early October. If you are wanting to get into surf kayaking, now is the time. With the Hobuck Hodown and the Pacific City Surf Off added to the point series and over 40 competitors coming to the Hobuck Hoedown last year, 2012 can only get bigger.
See you all in Pacific City next month!
