About Portland

P7110020Here in the Columbia River Gorge, we have many rivers to keep even the most skilled boaters coming back for more. Some of the best paddlers in the world call this area their home. Tao Berman, Nate and Heather Herbeck and Christie Glissmeyer just to name a few, live within a few miles of the Green Truss section of the White Salmon River. This section is home to the Gorge Games down river race and many other races. The rest of the river is filled with sections for all skill levels. That is just one river of the many we are blessed with in this region.

Other rivers worth mentioning are the Clackamas River, home to the upper Clackamas River Whitewater Festival in the spring and the East Fork of the Lewis River, home of the Northwest Creeking Competition. Rumor has it that Canyon Creek is back after begin shut down for the last few years due to a landslide blocking the put in. The Hood River is a great river for folks who are just starting to creek and want a continuous creeky style river.

All of the above rivers plus many more are detailed in the book, Soggy Sneakers, written and updated by several local paddlers. This book is now in it’s fourth edition and is also available in the “Kindle” ebook edition.

The one thing that makes this area the absolute best place to paddle is the people. One day you can paddle with a world record holder and the next you can paddle with an ordained minister, heck, he even married my wife and I.
