This past Saturday’s Hometown Throwdown went off with a bang. The middle TN area had recently been going through a major drought, one of the worst ones since the 1800′s. We had to look at other options for our Hometown Throwdowns. After doing a flatwater upstream race on Overall Creek in Murfreesboro and a throwrope competition on Percy Priest Lake, we were due for a break. And we got one. Last week, it started raining, then kept raining all week. As we watched the water levels go up, I decided to take a chance and call a flash paddle HTTD at Harkers Hole. We were going to do a big freestyle competition there, but thank god I had a back up plan. As it got closer to the weekend, the rain slowed and the Stones River dropped once again. Grrr. But not wanting to throw in the towel just yet, I decided to go with a 200 yd long slalom race at Harkers Hole. We went ahead with the Throwdown as planned. Can you believe? We actually had 14 adults and 1 youth participate! Rock on! Everyone put their heads together in setting up the slalom course. We inflated balloons, tied fishing line to them, and secured heavy nuts and bolts to them as anchors. The course was very hard because not only were the gates in hard to paddle through areas, but also they were continuously moving little by little by the river current. We put yellow balloons together in pairs as gates then set single green ones at random where the competitors would have to make a full circle around them. Around the gates the race turned into a full contact endeavor as people tried two or three at once to circle them! Awesome! Everyone made it down with no problems except aching muscles from a killer workout! The winners were as follows: Men’s heat 1: Chris Gibson, Men’s heat 2: Jim Reynolds, Women’s heat Jackie Iacono, and last but not least, youth’s heat Livesay James. Congratulations to all who won and thank you to all who competed! After it was all finished we spent some time working on Harker’s Hole in anticipation of more water to come.We had a great prize raffle there in the parking lot, everyone getting some cool free gear from our most excellent sponsors. When we got off the river we all went to Toot’s for some hot wings and ribs. It was delicious! Thanks World Kayak for a great time!
