Your Costa Rica ambassador : Davis Azofeifa Rugama

Davis Azofeifa

Growing up in rural Costa Rica I have always loved to be outdoors enjoying nature and especially the River. Since founding Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat in 2006 the river has become more than just enjoyment for me. Our goal is the protection of the vital biodiversity of the waters and forests of Sarapiqui.  As part of this goal, we have purchased over 50 acres of primary and secondary rainforest, along the Sarapiqui River, to protect the area from development and deforestation. To help fund the conservation project and our social programs, I own and operate a family run sustainable tourism project in Chilamate with my wife and three children.A major component of our socially conscious conservation effort is educating local youth in positive alternatives for enjoyment and employment. I have seen too many good kids go down the wrong path in life and I want to do all I can to stop this. Kayaking is the perfect option for many of these youths. For the past two years, I have organized a day dedicated to getting the local children in kayaks and rafts. The children and their families see tourist rafters and kayakers all year long but they do not have the means to try for themselves. By lending kayaks, paddles, rafts, and life jackets to the members of the local community, they finally have the opportunity to try the sport for themselves. So these days while it is hard to find me paddling on the river you will find me working tirelessly to see our family run conservation and sustainable tourism p roject succeed and you will find the pool outside our rainforest retreat full of local youth using our gear and practicing and learning how to paddle!
