The Oregon Water Resources Department’s Near Real Time Hydrographics Data web-page is the most comprehensive source of water flow information for anywhere in the State of Oregon and a few areas outside the state.  This single web-page will display gage information from many different agencies.  The following instructions are helpful to get the most from this information.

 

  • Bring up the web-page
  • http://apps.wrd.state.or.us/apps/sw/hydro_near_real_time/default.aspx
  • Click on Select a Basin and select Deschutes
  • Next click on Station Type
  • Discharge will display the in stream gage readings
  • Reservoir will display acre feet and surface elevation 
  • Canal will display the canal gage readings
  • Next click on Station Status
  • Select Near Real Time for discharge and canal, or Active for reservoir
  • Click on Station Nbr to see the graph
  • In Dataset select Instantaneous Flow
  • Then Refresh Graph to see the graph in cfs

 

The list starts upstream and moves down the basin.  Most of the gage names should be well known to boaters familiar with the area.  The Map feature to the right will show the exact location of each gage and is very useful to learn the flow at certain rapids.  Canal gage levels are useful to know where water is being removed from the river.  Reservoir levels can be used to predict future discharge levels.

 Meadow Camp

The diversion above Dam-it rapid (CENTRAL OREGON CN AB PILOT BUTTE NR BEND, OR) is usually 800 cfs at normal summer flows.  800 cfs minus the canal gage flow is what goes back into the river below 100% rapid via the hydro project.  This hydro project must leave a minimum flow of 400 cfs in stream below the diversion at all times as a scenic mitigation or stop generating power.  There is a gauge between Damit and Amazing on the river right that records the flow on this reach.  That flow information is sent to FERC quarterly to satisfy the requirements of the hydro-power permit.

Up stream supply side:  BWP = (0.93 BENO) – ARNO – CENO

Down stream drainage side:  BWP = DEBO + NCAO + NMCO + SWCO + DCMO
