Question-how many challenging kayaking events can you come up with to run on a river that is facing ongoing record low flows? Answer – I don’t know, but the KWP Fun Run Series keeps coming up with them. Last week’s challenge- get all participants to line up, pull their skirts totally off, roll, put their shirts back on, and continue on down a very bony river in full boatercross mode. A first for the series and a great event, resulting in a number of swims and numerous paddlers among the 25 in the water last week swearing to finally get some decent float
bags or amp up the ones they already have. Most significantly, the race results confirmed that it appears last year’s Fun Run Series winner will repeat, and Zack Fiddis will again carry away the trophy. Top female remains a tight race however, with Haley at 26 points and Sara at 22 locked in a fight that could last until the final event on Sat August 25th. Full Fun Run standings follow the weekly summary.
Sketchy Left, our short but challenging creeking run, saw a number of paddlers step up to challenge it last week, none more notable than Marcy, who ran it for the first time and styled it baby!
Although we’ve had poor levels this year, one thing that hasn’t let up has been the torrent of great post paddling food – last week we were treated to a fiesta of epic proportions, with Lora, Kees and Marcy making sure everyone had their share of tasty Mexican food and choice homemade chocolate cake (yeah, chocolate cake is Mexican…what’s your point?????) The KWP Fun Run Cookoff winner, to be announced
on the final day of the Series, Saturday August 25th, promises to be
tightly contested and no doubt, HIGHLY controversial, no matter the result. See you at Burleigh Falls for Fun Run Series Week 9, Thursday August 16 at 6:00.
