With Weeks 6 & 7 now in the past, the KWP Fun Run Series has entered the home stretch. In what can only be called making the best of what the river was offering up and ending up with a hit, the Fun Run hosted it’s first slalom event last week. Set up above the falls, the course featured three gates which tested paddler’s
ferrying, eddying and attaining skills in a challenging course. All participants agreed that this was one event they wanted to see more of in the future and ideas were tossed around about how to construct a more permanent way of setting up a course. Top 4 finishers were Rob Clive, Colin, Haley and Malcolm, with a special mention to Kees, who turned in an impressive performance only to hit miss the last gate and suffer a penalty that knocked him out of contention for the night’s big points.
Week 7 brought a bit
of rain but it was unfortunately not near enough to bring up water levels to anything approaching normal (4 days and nights of solid rain might start to make a difference). The low levels actually forced the Fun Run to feature it’s first land-based challenge in recent memory…..a Z-drag competition. Paddlers formed teams and competed against the clock to set up and execute a successful Z-drag rescue of a lawn tractor set up on the grassy turf of KWP headquarters.
Teams were penalized for incorrect knots and breaches of technique and in the end, Team Haley and Lora prevailed, picking up a cool 7 points a piece for
their efforts. Todd/Kees/Zack came in second for 6 points and Tom/Tony/Kamila
rounded out the top three finishers for 5 points each.
As far as leaders go after Week 7, Zack and Rob Clive are in a dead heat for first with 26 points each and as both of these competitors are former Fun Run champions, anything could happen over the next 3 weeks. The last two outings have also crowned a new leader in the race for top female, as Haley has pulled in front with 22
points, followed closely by Sara at 19 and Leah at 17. Full standings follow
this write up. And finally, in KWP Cookoff action, last week saw paddlers
tucking into a feast of deep fried chicken wings expertly cooked up by Rob
Kirby and his wingman (sorry) Bruce, accompanied by a killer side dish of
guacamole and other special touches prepared by Patty. This week’s spread was a
creative “Breakfast For Dinner” theme pulled together by Colleen, Haley and
Tony, who went to the trouble of going to the supermarket to pick up the
strudel. It was a truly fantastic breakfast feast, featuring scrambled eggs,
hash browns, 2 types of bacon, sausages, 3 kind of pancakes, strawberries,
pineapple, croissants and more that I can’t remember because I passed out after
sucking back two plates. Fun Run Week 8 goes at 6:00PM next Wednesday August 8th.
Be there, because we’re going to be.
