Atlanta Ambassador: Rick Thompson

Rick Thompson

Rick Thompson.I began Kayaking in May of 2008 when a friend of mine sold me his Kayak and gear for $400.00. It was love at first stroke. I lived in Lawrenceville which is close to the Middle Chattahoochee (The Buford Dam to Settles Bridge). Having a flexible work schedule I found myself visiting the Outfitter every other day to shuttle me to this class 2 section of the river. Paddling soon became my addiction and I soon found myself needing more than the Hooch had to offer. I talked to several boaters and they all told me the Nantahala river was the next big river I should go to. With no roll I headed to NC and the mighty Nantahala River. I soon found myself living at the river every weekend after that making new friends and paddling buddies. After many cold swims on the Nanty I realized that I had to learn my roll. I practiced at the Lake every day for weeks. I watched every you tube video on the internet and eventually put together what I now call my Bombproof roll.(my raft guide family took me to this secret spot near the Nantahala where I would practice my roll in warm water in between river trips) Spending my life on the river was my new dream. Watching the play boaters on the river instilled a new desire to become one. I bought my second boat and better gear and soon discovered the warm and wild waters of the Ocoee River. My paddling buddies grew exponentially and so did the new rivers. I found the Atlanta Whitewater club and began attending the meetings and paddling with several of the members on a regular basis. 2009 I met my wife Francheska at roll practice and In October we were married at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. In April of 2010 I became ACA certified class 4 whitewater instructor. My wife and I are active in our Kayak community and participate in as many Kayak events as possible – (Tallulah River Releases , Gauley fest , River clean ups , beginner trips, roll practices , etc). I probably don’t need to mention that I am a photo nut as well. I am super excited to continue paddling and ever more excited to bring beginners into the sport. I am hoping to make a difference in the world of kayaking anyway I can.
